A Quiet Moment Before the Celebration, Captured Forever
There is something truly special about the calm just before a wedding ceremony. It is a moment filled with anticipation, joy, and a touch of quiet reflection. Recently, I had the privilege of travelling from my base in Staffordshire to Paris to document a beautiful bride as she prepared for her traditional wedding, and when that bride is your sister-in-law, the experience becomes even more special.
Her day began with soft laughter in the room, makeup brushes sweeping gently across her skin, and the careful styling of her stunning afro hair. Every detail told its own story. The delicate jewellery laid out with intention. It reminded me why I love this work so much.
The shoes waiting patiently by the window. The dress that held both heritage and elegance. All these elements came together to create a memory worth holding onto.
Why Getting Ready Photos Matter More Than You Think
Bridal getting ready photos are often some of the most treasured images from a wedding gallery. They capture the tenderness, the anticipation, and the love shared before the ceremony begins. For this bride, embracing her traditional wedding in the heart of Paris created a beautiful blend of culture and romance. On this particular morning, the bride was surrounded by two very important people, her mum and her aunty. They helped her prepare with so much love, which instantly set the tone for the day. Capturing these interactions created a natural storytelling flow that couples often look for when searching for terms like bridal preparation photography, traditional wedding photographer, or afro hair bridal styling.
Here is what made this morning so meaningful from a photography perspective.
1. Makeup and Afro Hair Styling Photos Add Authenticity
These images show the real transformation, the glow, the excitement. Afro bridal hair is an art form in itself, and documenting it adds cultural beauty to the visual story.
I arrived early at the venue to capture my sister-in-law’s preparation from the very beginning. The room was buzzing with peaceful athmosphere makeup brushes being arranged, curling irons heating up, croissant and pain au chocolat at the table and that first cup of coffee being poured. The soft morning light filtering through windows was absolutely perfect for capturing the anticipation.
Watching the makeup artist at work, I focused on the details: the precision of the eyeliner brush, the gentle dabbing of foundation, the careful application of lipstick. These are skilled artisans transforming an already beautiful woman into a radiant bride. I loved capturing the concentration on the makeup artist’s face and the trust in my sister-in-law’s closed eyes.
The hairdresser’s yaRosieCoiffure at work was equally compelling. Watching her prep and style an Afro was mesmerising. The careful combing through each section, the precise cutting to shape the silhouette, the strategic placement of pins to create structure and volume, every movement was intentional and artistic.
I photographed the hands at work with the comb, the careful snipping of scissors to perfect the shape, the gentle teasing and styling to achieve that stunning Afro look. I captured the transformation happening in real time, and wide shots captured the entire scene - the organised chaos of beauty preparations unfolding in this beautiful Parisian place.
2. Detail Shots Boost the Aesthetic of Your Whole Gallery
Detail photos are more than simple close ups. They bring depth and cohesion to your entire wedding gallery. Items like the dress, shoes, jewellery, and cultural accessories help set the tone of your day and create visual anchors that tie your story together.
These images also become incredibly valuable when you print your wedding album. Detail shots work beautifully between the main moments, filling transitions with texture and meaning. They help your album flow naturally, so when you turn each page you relive the story in a smooth, intentional way. This traditional wedding incorporated congolese dress, jewelry, and shoes.
I photographed the wedding attire before it was worn, the dress hanging by the window, the shoes paired together, jewelry laid out carefully on furniture. But I also captured these items in use, being put on with care by the people who matter most for the bride.

3. Family Involvement Strengthens Emotional Impact
Having her mum and aunty present made every frame feel personal. These candid moments are the ones couples come back to again and again.
I watched for the small gestures: mum smoothing her daughter’s hair, the aunt clasping a bracelet, my sister-in-law catching her own reflection and realising she truly looked like a bride. These micro-moments happen quickly, so I stayed alert and anticipated them, drawing on my knowledge of the family dynamics to know when something special was about to unfold.
At the end of the day, getting ready photos are about more than documenting beauty routines. They are are often some of the most meaningful images from a wedding day. They’re about capturing the transition from daughter to wife, the passing of wisdom from one generation to another, and the collective effort of a community of women preparing one of their own for life’s biggest celebration.
Being able to photograph my sister-in-law’s preparation in Paris, surrounded by family, reminded me why I love wedding photography. These are the images she’ll return to again and again, the ones that remind her not just of how she looked, but of how she felt surrounded by love as she prepared to honour her traditions while stepping into a new chapter.
And for me, having travelled from Staffordshire to capture these moments, it was an experience I’ll treasure forever. That’s exactly what makes photographing these moments so special, and why I feel so grateful to have been there with my camera to document it all. And if you are reading this congratulations again to the newlyweds!
